Do we pay to be POISONED???

Hey WHAT are we really EATING!! Food in its raw form is usually the best! Why are we paying to be poisoned! Who knew –  I read this article and thought I was being cautious!  Did not even consider my soy protein powder.

Soy is the cheapest protein available today, and it is a major component of most animal feeds. Cheap soy protein allows chickens to grow the fastest, and produce the maximum amount of eggs during their peak laying cycles. So why do Rob and I pay more for organic, soy-free chicken feed? Why do we read labels and avoid eating highly processed soy products like the plague?

Because soy beans are very high in phytic acid and isoflavones. Phytic acid blocks absorption of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. The phytic acid in soy beans is not reduced or neutralized by soaking, sprouting or long, slow cooking. Soy Isoflavones mimic estrogen in the body. Soy processing leads to the formation of toxic nitrosamines (carcinogens) and the formation of MSG. Additional MSG is often added to soy products during manufacturing. Many soy products contain high levels of aluminum.

Getting Back on Track!

Had a rough weekend, so this is always a good reminder!!! This was one of those weekends where I ate too much salt and processed foods.  This morning felt like a bloated potato! Redirect and stay on track is my goal for today!!

Make a salad “chutney“!

  • small dice cucumber, red onion, roasted red pepper, tomatoes
  • top with a favorite dressing or red wine vinegar, olive oil, kosher salt, pepper, oregano
  • use on top of any greens or add to a sandwich

Organic on a budget!

My position on organic foods is quite simple: If I had a Dr. Oz or Oprah food budget, I’d buy everything organic. It’s true that organic foods are not purchased exclusively by the very rich or else it wouldn’t be a billion dollar industry. There are lots of regular people with regular incomes who have made the lifestyle choice of buying organic foods. I have made that choice, whenever possible and affordable, and some items that I’ve been buying organic for a decade now like milk, yogurt, eggs and butter are not cheap by any standard but I feel are worth it for my health. When it comes to produce, if there is a sale on organic products, I’ll jump at the occasion and there are certain conventional products, like berries, I will no longer eat if I cannot buy them organic. Waste NOT can help your WAIST!

Just read an article on how much food we waste. It is estimated everyday americans waste enough food to fill the rose bowl stadium. WOW!

So last week I started to pay attention to how much edible food my family squander.  I was just amazed! I thought I was pretty frugal! Now this was not a scientific experiment but it was enough for me to realize how much money I am throwing away weekly.  Especially because I try to buy fresh and depending on school and sports schedules sometimes the fresh produce does not get consumed and just rots in my refrigerator.  So this week I am on a mission to waste less!

My biggest house hold waste tends to be fruit.  I really try to judge how much to purchase each week but we all know with schedules and picky kids it does not always get eaten.  So this week I started freezing fruit in small quantities to use for future recipes. Plus having frozen fresh foods on hand is better for my health and waist line!

Freezing Fruit:  After washing the fruit, I remove all skin and seeds depending on the kind of fruit.  Then I portioned the fruit into one cup portion sizes.  Then I transferred the fruit to a small zip lock bags and labeled and date.  Some fruits like apples, pears and bananas will darken which does not bother me but there are techniques you can use with ascorbic acid to preserve your fruits. Also some fruits like oranges, lemons and limes, I puree with a little water and freeze in ice-cube trays.  After frozen in the trays I put in zip lock bags for later use.   Remember air leads to loss of flavor so the more air you can remove the better.  I prefer to freeze in zip lock bags rather than plastic containers, I find it is easier to remove the air.

Then it is ready to use anytime. The frozen fruit is great for smoothies.  Even use to make a sorbet or bake with!  I love it on my oatmeal!

Oh to good not to re blogg! I always say with working out Just show up! At least you moved getting there but this I am putting on a tee shirt!!!
